Nigeria’s Agricultural Sector: Challenges and Opportunities
Nigeria’s agricultural sector, employing over 70% of the rural population and contributing 23.78% to GDP in 2024, faces significant hurdles. Limited access to financing prevents 44 million smallholder farmers from investing in modern farming tools and technologies. Fertilizer use remains low at just 8 kg/ha, leading to reduced soil fertility and crop yields. Furthermore, the lack of irrigation systems impacts 70% of rain-fed farms, leaving them vulnerable to climate variability.
Post-harvest losses remain another critical challenge, with 20–40% of produce lost annually due to inadequate storage and transportation infrastructure. Additionally, middlemen-driven market systems result in profit losses of up to 30% for farmers, further exacerbating their financial struggles.
These challenges hinder productivity and highlight the urgent need for transformative solutions in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
AgriBoost Initiative
To address these challenges, CartAGRO, in collaboration with Voice of the Farmer, has launched the AgriBoost Initiative, a transformative program aimed at enhancing farmers’ productivity and profitability.
AgriBoost is founded on two critical pillars of support
1. Financial Support
Access to affordable financing tailored to farmers’ unique needs, enabling investment in modern tools and resources.
2. Input Support
Provision of high-quality agricultural inputs, including fertilizers, herbicides, and improved seeds, to boost yields and ensure sustainable farming practices.
Building a Thriving Agricultural Future
Through the AgriBoost Initiative, CartAGRO is committed to creating a thriving agricultural sector. By equipping farmers with the tools and resources they need to succeed, the program fosters a future where agriculture flourishes, and farmers thrive.
